About this deal

But nonbinary and/or genderfluid folks who use pronoun sets like ‘she/they’, ‘he/they’, or ‘she/he/they’ often cite their struggle with everyone defaulting to the binary ones.

The characters were not terrible, but I had a better time reading about the secondary ones than the main ones. An awkward first date leads to a sparkling romance between one of the most powerful witches in town and a magical newbie in this rom-com by Lana Harper, New York Times bestselling author of Payback’s a Witch. She was born in Serbia and lived in Bulgaria, Hungary, and Romania before moving to the United States, where she now lives in Chicago with her family. There were also numerous undertones that kept things interesting and pieces and gears moving and turning. However: When you take the time to include a scene where the protagonist says he uses and welcomes BOTH he and they pronouns, it’s a kick in the teeth to not see a single, solitary instance of ‘they/them’ used to refer to Morty. morty's profile shows that they are a nonbinary persona and they use he/they pronouns; this is explicitly said in the novel. At her best friend’s urging, Nina goes on a date with Morty Gutierrez, the nonbinary, offbeat soul of spontaneity and co-owner of the Shamrock Cauldron. Morty’s support and confidence in her help Nina find her way when she gets a bit lost, and I found them sexy and fun together. Nineve "Nina" Blackmoore is a fancy badass and I've enjoyed her in the other two books but getting to really meet her and her super dorkiness was perfecto. I will definitely go back and catch up on book two, as well as continue the series when the next one is out. In the first book, Emmy wasn’t sure about staying in Thistle Grove and taking her place, but Back in a Spell had her morphing into so much more.Reading the difference between Nina and Morty's families was fun as was Jessa, Nina's BFF (I'll just be over here hoping she gets a story).
