About this deal

i don't have Sony GM 50/F1.2 atm so i can't compare with it directly(thou i had it earlier) also this lens isn't a GM competitor

Finally, we tested focus throw on both lenses. Sadly, the two lenses are nonlinear in their movement which might not be very important for stills shooters but can be problematic for some video shooters. Overall the build quality is very good , high quality plastic and a very nice textured focusing ring but is below Sony GM or Sigma ones. What is surprising is the very low light of the lens only 420g so much lighter than the v1 The minimum focusing distance is just 0.40m (1.31ft), so it is versatile and possible to produce a unique perspective close to the subject. This makes it easier to take close-up and dramatic shots of food, portraits, and nature. When it comes to close-up image quality the Samyang is not sharp close-up wide open in the center and you need to close to at least f/4 for decent results.

Fast and quiet Autofocus thanks to the Samyang linear STM make this an ideal lens for photographers and videographers. The minimal noise and more accurate control of the focusing lens groups mean this is a smooth, easy to use lens. While this FD is the sharpest 50mm I have gotten at 1.4 after many tests, its still is a bit too glowy for my test when I want to do a 1.4 environmental portrait. The Opera 50mm is dust and moisture resistant, and though its AF system is of the ring-type ultrasonic variety rather than a more modern stepping motor design, it's fast and reliable.

This lens is great for videographers, thanks to minimised focus breathing. Reducing the amount of time taken to focus on multiple subjects. Ah sorry, my mistake, many people asked me different things here and via PM. I probably got confused who asked what. Autofocus is virtually silent. As with other ‘stepping motor’ systems, the focus ring is electronically coupled and, in this case, enables particularly precise manual control. Sony Sonnar T* FE 55mm f/1.8 ZA CA test – top left f/2, top right f/2.8, bottom left f/4, bottom right f/5.6 I wonder if shooting it with the superb new AF in the A7r5, vs your A7r3, would make a significant improvement in the AF accuracy.

On the inside, we have 9 elements in 8 groups, three of which are aspherical. The lens is internal focusing, so it does not rotate or extend in use. This is helpful when using polarisers and graduated filters. Minimum focusing distance is 0.45m (1.47 feet), a maximum magnification of 0.15x. This is fairly typical of any traditional 50mm lens. But it's the Opera's image quality that impresses most. Sharpness is excellent, even wide open at f/1.4, becoming simply sublime from f/2 right through to f/11. Purple fringing is very well controlled, right at the corners of the frame, and you can forget about distortion, as there simply isn't any.

The main reason for the Art lens’s weight gain is that it has a much more complex and sophisticated optical path than its predecessor, based on 13 rather than eight elements. These include one complex aspherical element and three SLD (Special Low Dispersion) elements. You can't be meaning exposure time since that has little to no effect on bokeh balls and regardless - some of the shoots were taken with SS as low as 1/5000th and other with like 3, 5 even 20 seconds and there was no onion rings in bokeh balls either way. In general bokeh is a strong point for SY 50 FEII, it's creamy and smooth. Samyang AF 50mm F1.4 FE II bokeh test – top left f/1.4, top right f/2, bottom left f/2.8, bottom right f/4 For more options have a look at our lens top listswhich feature optics we've reviewed and compiled into easy-to-read lists so you can make more informed decisions.Build quality feels superb, although there are no weather-seals and the focus ring doesn’t quite have the tactile fluidity of a lens like the Zeiss Milvus. But you can count on the Sigma’s autofocus system to be fast and accurate. This all results in a relatively large lens for its specification, weighing a formidable 585g compared to a conventional DSLR 50mm f/1.4 lens that might weigh as little as 220g. Having said that, it is manufactured substantially using metal and looks very good mounted on the Sony Alpha A7R II. It mounts solidly, with no play whatsoever in the mount / lens interface. The center performance (surprisingly) favored the Samyang in my tests. The mid-frame results also slightly favored the Samyang (not shown here), while I felt the Sony’s corners were a little better. Yes, the micro-patterned rubber focus ring helps protect this lens from light rain, snow and dust. What is the widest aperture on this lens?

If your current firmware version is lower than the version being offered below, please update your firmware now. The bokeh of both lenses did not impress us with small light circles which were clean on the Samyang but not round at faster apertures and on the Zeiss, side had clear onion rings. The Sony-Zeiss 55mm on the other hand seems to perform much better with OK sharpness wide open and great sharpness across the frame close up at f/2.8. The AF 50mm F1.4 FE II is the smallest (88.9mm in length) and lightest (420g in weight) among all the large-aperture standard 50mm focal length lenses compatible with the Sony FE mount. Excellent resolution in all areas of the image Apochromatic lenses have special lens elements (aspheric, extra-low dispersion etc) to minimize the problem, hence they usually cost more. The corners are even worse and the lens might suffer from field curvature which also affects its corner performance close up. Thanks to its focusing ring than can be turned into aperture ring the Samyang 50mm F1.4 II has ergonomics very suited for video and if we add on top its minimal focus breathing it is one of the best in video Sony Sonnar T* FE 55mm f/1.8 ZA sharpness test corners – top left f/2, top right f/2.8, bottom left f/4, bottom right f/5.6 When it comes to CA the Samyang seems to have very little longitudinal chromatic aberrations, the Sony-Zeiss 55mm seems even cleaner in our test but it might have to do with its better close-up performance more than it CA-reducing capabilities. Ergonomics are quite good with a custom mode button allowing to switch the focusing ring from focus to aperture control. there is also a focus hold button (programmed via the body). Unfortunately there is no AF/MF button
