Each section includes lists of theme-specific words and expressions, accompanied by illustrations, to help expand the student's vocabulary. AJALT created the best-selling Japanese for Busy People series, as well as the Japanese for Young People series, both published by Kodansha USA Publishing. This first of three volumes introduces “survival Japanese”—the absolute minimum amount of Japanese needed to live in Japan. Used alone, this book would be adequate for a short stay in Japan since basics like "Where is the train station? The grammar explanations only teach you enough to be functional, there are no deep digressions into the socio-psychological meaning of 'wa', the path it takes is clear and simple. Grammar and content topics are carefully selected to assist learners to effectively develop sentence patterns and vocabulary related to each topic through the practice of talking about them.
