About this deal

An atmospheric thriller with the perfect claustrophobic setting. This is equal parts creepy, suspenseful and gruesome—everything you could want in a novel for this genre. This is a sure-fire hit guaranteed to keep you seeing shadows in the snow on those freezing winter nights. I loved it.” Pearse goes from strength to strength in The Retreat. The suspense inexorably builds to a stunning climax. An added treat is the return of Elin Warner, who is a fascinating character one can only root for.' David Baldacci, No.1 Sunday Times bestselling author of Mercy I ripped right through both novels, expecting all ends to be neatly tied up at the end, and left frustrated and disappointed both times. I’ll definitely read the next book, but I’m confused as Why did Seth and Bea both have limestone powder on their mouths?? I would understand if it was just found randomly on their bodies, but why their mouths???

Pearse not only creates believably fallible characters, she also vividly portrays the frigid landscape of Le Sommet buffeted by blizzards, and a chilling epilogue cries out for a sequel. Crime-fiction readers will want to keep an eye on Pearse.” Caleb agrees that his father was a murderer, but he was trying to change until Ronan encouraged him to make the bad investment. Ugh, I can’t with these explanations. Deliciously paced with rich worldbuilding, The Retreat teems with questionable motives, unspoken frustrations, and hair-raising cliffhangers. Pearse’s latest thriller is a reminder that beneath the glimmering exterior of the places and people we love, vengeance often lurks. I absolutely could not put this book down!” If Sarah Pearse’s sensational debut The Sanatorium summoned the dangerous spirits of Gothic storytellers past, her new novel The Retreat recalls the one-by-one-by-one nerve-shredding of Agatha Christie at her darkest. Pearse is one of those rare contemporary writers—alongside Ruth Ware, Lucy Foley, and Alice Feeney—both reviving and refreshing the traditions of mystery fiction. A fresh, daring, irresistible thriller.” In the present case, we have a WHOLE mess of stuff. I like an intricate plot but to me this one was just messy. The longer Elin stays, the more secrets she uncovers. And when someone else drowns in a diving incident, Elin begins to suspect that there’s nothing accidental about these deaths. But why would someone target the guests at this luxury resort? Elin must find the killer—before the island’s history starts to repeat itself. Sarah Pearse has expertly crafted another eerie, atmospheric thriller that will have you looking over your shoulder as you read. A wonderfully chilling story of grief, revenge, and family secrets. An absorbing escape!” No one understands why Bea was on Carey Island when she was supposed to be on a business trip to the US. Bea called Caleb and said she was on her trip. She texted him the night before she died. Pearse’s engrossing debut boasts a highly atmospheric setting . . . This dark tale of family dynamics is sure to please suspense fans.”

Is it me, or do you feel like your head might explode? There was just SO much going on here and, to me, a lot of it didn’t make sense. We have the toxic Leger family. So much time was spent discussing this mysterious fire that I suspected Maya was up to something. But there shouldn’t be anything too traumatizing in the latest case she’s caught, out at an island retreat off the South Devon coast where she lives. Never mind that her fiance Will designed the resort, or that his sister Farrah is a manager there. A young woman, seemingly inebriated, has fallen off a cliffside. CCTV shows that it was likely accidental, but the more Elin investigates, the less sure she is that it wasn’t murder. There’s something about this island that feels deeply off, a feeling that’s affirmed for her by the resort employee who originally discovered the woman’s body:The lab finds powder around Bea’s mouth and Elin remembers that she also noticed it around Seth’s. The lab thinks it’s limestone from a quarry.

The Leger group discusses why Bea came to the island. Maya says that she heard someone sneak out of their villa. Be careful who you root for, as no character is safe in Sarah Pearse’s new novel The Retreat. In the spirit of a true thriller, the tension is taut and the suspense is real as the pace builds to a heart-stopping finale. A triumphant second novel, which is no mean feat.” Hana comes to tell Elin that Maya heard someone leave the villa. She also says that Maya had a friend whose father worked at the school on Carey Island. Elin and Tom go out in a boat to investigate and find another body. But it’s not Rob – apparently he is just messy and was out snorkeling with his phone switched off. Another quality that Pearse wants an aspiring author to have is perseverance. In her childhood days, Pearse was a huge fan of Shirley Hughes and her book called Dogger was her most favorite. The two people who have inspired Pearse the most are her mother and grandmother. Both of them were funny and kind human beings and taught her important lessons about life. Pearse’s mother was particularly instrumental in helping her develop her creative brain and imaginative powers. She likes to give credit for everything she has achieved in her life to her.Seth’s murder was never explained. How did Caleb do it? What was up with the drugs in Seth’s bag? Was Seth doing some drug dealing with Caleb tagging along?? Caleb shoots Ronan in the leg and then Elin in her arm. She throws herself at him and pins him down. What’s your take on The Retreat? Early Goodreads readers do not seem impressed. Please leave a comment!

A colorful and tense murder mystery with a chilling (in more ways than one) atmosphere. . . There is a pleasing pressure-cooker feel to proceedings, reminiscent of Agatha Christie’s classic And Then There Were None. Pearse uses clever red herrings—secrets, pills, affairs, mental illness—and the stand-off scenes between Elin and the murderer are genuinely scary.” I absolutely loved it. So many threads, more red herrings than a North Sea fishing trawler, cliffhangers galore and my absolute favorite —short, snappy chapters. It’s a riveting, twisty turny read, a classic whodunnit with a killer final twist.” Elin is at work. After being taken off the MCIT (major crimes investigation team) after her mini-breakdown, she’s been moved to a burglary case. Just then, she gets a call to investigate the body at Lumen, as she’s the closest officer. She brings Steed with her.

Elin swims over to the island and hears a gunshot. The guests have barricaded themselves in the lodge and she can’t get inside. Haha finally someone has some sense! The longer Elin stays, the more secrets she uncovers. And when someone else drowns in a diving incident, Elin begins to suspect that the old stories about the island are true. A spine-tingling setting, an unnerving cast of characters and so many incredibly creepy moments . . . this is not one to read before bed!” We all fancy a spa break don't we? Well don't include me after reading this book. It had me hooked from start to finish.' ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ If The Sanatorium was all about the atmosphere, The Retreat is all about the tension.' ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐
