About this deal

A late bottled vintage is from a single year but aged for up to six years in wood, so once bottled it's ready to drink. Aged tawny is brilliant with stilton cheese, and very good with pumpkin pie, walnuts and milk chocolate dishes. You should also note that the picture images show only our serving suggestions of how to prepare your food - all table accessories and additional items and/or ingredients pictured with the product you are purchasing are not included. This sediment can either be left to settle at the bottom of the bottle, or strained through a muslin cloth.

Geosmin is a chemical compound that can give wines and ports an unpleasant, earthy odour, usually the result of using grape crops having been affected by rot. In Britain, we tend to associate port with stilton but it is a surprisingly versatile wine: white port is great with tonic; ruby and cheaper tawnies can be used in cocktails in place of vermouth; a chilled tawny makes a nice aperitif; and young vintages are a perfect fit with dark chocolate.Ruby, reserve and late bottled ports go well with brie, camembert and cheddar, bitter chocolate dishes, as well as coffee-flavoured desserts like tiramisu. The inspiration behind the Best wine collection comes from our wine experts, who are passionate about sourcing exceptional quality wines from the world's finest wine producers.

Natural corks may be suitable for your green bin or home compost caddy if you have one – just be sure to check your local guidelines and remove any other materials attached to it first. We asked Charles for his tips on choosing the best bottle of port, and explain what we found when we tested supermarket ports. When we tested supermarket ports in 2021, our wine expert Charles identified some bottles that seemed to be impacted by this, so there's always a possibility you might get a duff bottle. Port is often served in a dedicated port, sherry or dessert wine glass, which looks like a small wine glass. The cheapest style of port but made one of the Douro Valley’s smaller producers, Quinta de la Rosa, there’s not a shortage of class. Then, while there is still lots of unfermented sugar, brandy is added which kills the yeasts and stops fermentation. Attractive beginning leading to compact wine of great volume and structure, with fresh, velvety-textured tannins and fine acidity.

A modern take on white port made with two grape varieties, Malvasia Fina and Moscatel Gallega which are cold-fermented and sold unaged to preserve primary fruit. This delicious example from Graham’s is at the lighter end of the style, with soft tannins and a delicious cherry and almond flavour. You might think port lasts forever after it’s been opened, but sadly that’s not the case, though it differs by type. Read on for our full guide including what the difference is between red and tawny ports, decoding the label, and the best way to serve it for maximum flavour. Aged in small seasoned oak casks and carefully blended to produce a smooth, elegant Port with complexity and finesse.
